Leonardo Bonucci says Cristiano should win the Ballon d’Or award even though he’d like to see a defender win it.
Rafael Varane has been impressive this year, winning the Champions League with Madrid and the world cup with France. With some suggesting the 25-year-old has a good shout for the trophy.
Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe also had a fantastic World Cup with France and have been nominated for the award.
Lionel Messi and Luca Modric who won FIFA’s The Best award are other nominees that can win the award.
Ronaldo played a good season for Madrid, leading them to their third consecutive Champions League title. The Portuguese has also started life in the Serie A well, scoring 7 times in 11 appearances.
Speaking ahead of their home game against Manchester United in the Champions League, which would see Ronaldo face his former team again and Paul Pogba return to his old stomping ground for the first time, Bonucci said:
“It would be nice to see a defender win the Ballon d’Or like Varane but, as much as he gave to Real last year and for all that he has shown, the Golden Ball must go to Cristiano Ronaldo.”
“Paul and I are still good friends. He’s a great player and he told me he was really excited to be coming back to this stadium. I hope he plays very well but Juve win the game.”
“Defending is not only done by the defenders, just as attacking is not only down to the forwards.”
“I think we are more confident and more experienced now than when I was here before and it’s thanks to the excellent job done by the coach and the club.”
