Pep Guardiola Says City Had To Overcome Fear In Derby Win

Pep Guardiola says his men had to overcome “fear” to get all three points in the Manchester Derby on Sunday.

City was stunned by United in the derby last season, surrendering a two-goal first-half lead to lose 3-2.

But the Citizens were cool enough this time to get all 3 points to dislodge Liverpool at the top.

David Silva had given the Citizens an early lead in the first half before Aguero struck 3 minutes after the restart.

There were fears of a repeat when Anthony Martial pulled one back for United from the penalty spot.

Gundogan finished off coolly after a fine pass from Bernardo Silva to kill off the game.

For that, Guardiola showered praises on his players in his post-match interview with Sky Sports.

“The players wanted to play good in front of our fans. We know how important the game is against United.

“We cannot forget in our history we are always behind United.

“It’s completely understandable [to be nervous], especially in that situation with what happened last season. But we reacted well and the goal from Sergio helped us play a lot better.

“Last season when we conceded the first goal we were in chaos a little bit. This time we didn’t concede another chance.

“In the first half, we played with a little bit of fear. We didn’t want to lose the ball, but we didn’t attack in the best way. Of course [United] were so deep it’s not easy. They defended well, they were so aggressive man-to-man.

“But we made a good performance in a big game against a top, top team. I’m happy for the result.”
