Gareth Southgate has branded Three Lions striker and captain Harry Kane as the best goalscorer in the world.

Kane scored a late winner against Croatia as England secured a place in the semi-finals of the Nations League.

The Spurs captain scored in the 85th minute to complete a comeback win for the home side. The forward was also a provider for Jesse Lingard’s equalizer to cancel out Andrej Kramiric’s goal.

Having gone several games without finding the back of the net for the Three Lions, there were already calls for Southgate to bench his star forward.

The former Middlesbrough manager however stuck with him and got a reward for his persistence.

Speaking after England’s win against Croatia in Wembley, the 48-year-old said:

“I think Harry is the best goalscorer in the world frankly so you always loathe to take a player of his ability off.

“Some people question decisions in the summer but he’s our main penalty taker and our leader.

“In 98 per cent of games his hold up play and everything is critical, he played a fantastic pass for Raheem [Sterling] in the first half.

“So we have huge belief in him and he is so hungry to lead the team further.”

England will now compete with Portugal, Switzerland and the winner of group A1 in the Semi-finals.
